6 Reasons to Care About Dirty Windows

For many business professionals, life’s never-ending to-do-list has us constantly checking our phones.  So it makes sense that something as seemingly inconsequential as your business’ windows is an easy thing to overlook.  You may assume that unless a baseball or a tornado is headed their way, your windows are fine.  Only, what if they weren’t?  Like any other component of a building, windows have a finite lifespan.  The materials used in window framing and mounting can degrade over time due to aging and wear.  Failing windows can create a host of serious problems for your facility.   Here are 6 reasons to care about dirty windows.

First of all, as the old adage goes, father time is undefeated.  Except for Lebron James…and maybe Keith Richards?  The truth is, time is coming for your windows, just like anything else.  Sometimes neglected window panes are simply dirty.  In other cases the thick buildup of dirt and grime is hiding damage underneath. Which brings us to reason number 1…

1. Dirty windows can mask serious problems

Routine window cleaning is essential window maintenance.   Getting the glass cleaned will allow you to give them a checkup. Uncovering problems early will allow you to take action and prevent further damage to your building. If the job is done by a professional, any reputable window cleaning company should let you know if they come across broken panes, seals, or frames. They’ll note water damage, mineral buildup, and other issues.   By properly maintaining the glass you will prolong its life.  Window replacement can be a very expensive job.

2. Energy efficiency

Windows see a constant barrage of natural threats, including rain, snow, sunlight, wind, and extreme temperatures.  For example, prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to rotting of the frame and surrounding siding.  It can cause warping of the wood.   The expansion and contraction of these materials can lead to cracks or gaps.  Cleaning the windows allows you to be proactive and stay ahead of these problems.

Old, drafty buildings are often cold (or hot) for many reasons.  One of the biggest culprits is the windows.  Once again those window gaps and broken seals are not only raising your energy bills, but they’re potentially letting in insects, pollens, and mold from outside.

Moisture and condensation can be a one-two punch to your windows.  If windows are not properly sealed, or if the seal is aged and has deteriorated moisture can seep in.  Moisture that has crept between window panes and frames can lead to wood rot, mold growth, fogging or mineral buildup.  Cleaning the windows can remove moss, mold, and mildew, preventing further damage. And once again, this allows to you inspect for structural damage.

4. UV Radiation can be a silent threat

Over time the sun can fade or discolor window frames, sealants, and other materials.  Prolonged exposure to UV rays can degrade the integrity of certain types of window glass, or its surrounding seals, leading to weaking or breakage.  You might never notice these problems unless you are up close, and cleaning the glass. Professional window cleaners should always notify and consult you on problems like this.

5.  Your business’ image

As we like to talk about in this blog, the physical image of your business has a tremendous impact on your customers, the community and your reputation.  Dirty windows are doing nothing to help.

6.  Clarity

Let’s be clear: the ideal glass is transparent, right? Over time the buildup of organic matter can etch and erode the surface of the glass.  Being semi-porous, the surface of glass is vulnerable.  For example, calcium buildup from hard water (think landscaping sprinklers) can fog the glass.  So can atmospheric sea-salt if you’re near the ocean.  Organic matter left to decay can be acidic and lead to surface etching.  All of these issues will effect visibility and potentially ruin your views.  Remember: clean glass > neglected glass.
